Why should 3-year-olds come to school?

Teachers can:

  • Help with separation anxiety between children and parents
  • Help with tantrums that many children exhibit at this age
  • Work with speech and language development
  • Detect possible developmental or learning delays
  • Assist children with following directions and making choices
  • Help students to develop skills such as sharing and taking turns
  • Teach the students routines and self-help skills

Children will begin to develop friendships outside of the family circle. They will have opportunities to play together in both small and large groups. They will develop responsibilities through daily chores such as being the line leader, door holder, weather person, calendar person, etc. Their sense of independence will grow as they develop important life skills. Your little one will start to explore the world outside your home. They will begin learning rules to more difficult games.

What Is Readiness?

Being ready for school includes:

  • Being socially adjusted, emotionally aware, and able to communicate with adults and other children.
  • Having awareness of print and letter-sound relationships, and understanding a story.
  • Understanding basic math ideas, patterns, shapes, and how to put things in a certain order.
  • Having an awareness about animal and plant life, and people’s roles in the family and the community.
  • Being comfortable with individual creativity and an appreciation for self-expression through the arts.
  • Being healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally so that children are ready and able to learn.
  • Parents who are able to support and encourange their child’s educational experience.

School Readiness Tips

You can make school readiness part of your family routine to ensure they have necessary skills BEFORE they enter school! Ways to ensure readiness include:

  • Reading to your child every day.
  • Sing and play with your child daily.
  • Talk to your child all day – in the car, while changing a diaper, during bath
    time, and while feeding!
  • Visit the library and bring home books.
  • Visit your local school and Judy Center events, even before your child enters school!
  • Let your child help with simple chores.
  • Allow your child to help find items while shopping for groceries and goods!
  • Go for a walk in your neighborhood and talk about what you see.
